Solo Circumnavigating Lake Superior by Sea Kayak
Watch the video of the trip here! I’ll upload pictures from the trip on here sometime soon.
A note to readers:
First, WWW is where I report the Wind Weather and Waves of the day.
Second, Upon completion of the trip, I discovered my daily milage was inaccurate because my GPS was only pinging my location every 10 minutes vs tracing my location for accurate milage. This means, If I was to have paddled in a circle, or zig zagged within those 10 minutes, It wouldn’t have tracked it and would draw a straight line between the 10 minute points. My total tracked milage was a little under 1,100 miles, but the likely total if it had known how to set it to track properly would’ve been closer to 1,300. With that in mind, the milage is relatively close, but the longer the milage is in the day, the more discrepancies there would be in tracking and the less accurate it is. I leave the milage I recorded in my journal present here so you can at least have a sense of the day to day workload.
Saturday, June 3, 2023 - Day 1 - 18 miles
WWW: Water was calm until noon when it got a little choppy. Light breeze in the morning, mid headwind in the afternoon, sunny morning and foggy afternoon,
Day one in the books! Feels good to finally be done planning and on the water. Sure hope I have everything. I guess we’ll find out soon.
Sunday, June 4 - Day 2 - 32 miles
WWW: I think today was the best paddling conditions possible. Glass smooth water all day and a low for with sun. Doesn’t get any better.
I forgot to mention yesterday I camped at Knife River campground. The manager Randy was kind and let me stay for free. I hit the water at 7:30am and took advantage of the perfect conditions. Camped on a small private inlet in Beaver Bay tonight. Feeling great! Goin to bed now.
Monday, June 5 - Day 3 - 18 miles
WWW: Weather was nothing like yesterday… strong headwind all day. Medium bow breaking waves the morning and big rollers all afternoon. Cloudy and windy all day but now sunny in the evening.
Today was intense and amazing. Palisade, Shovel Point, and the shore just past there was… absolutely spectacular. I got to chat with some climber on shovel point right after having explored my first sea caves at palisade head. Absolutely incredible to see! A bunch of kids at an observation point cheered loud and hard as I paddled around the point in what probably looked like intense waves. It made me smile for a few miles. I am now camped at what I believe is Pork Bay with a mile of of pebbly beaches all to myself.
Tuesday, June 6 - Day 4 - 22 miles?
WWW: Not quite as bad as yesterday, but still a bit gnarly. Light headwind all day with some big rollers in the morning and medium to small the rest of the day.
Good day. Stopped in tote for a good hot lunch after a cold and windy morning. First time launching into waves after lunch. Found a rose floating a half mile out from the shore. Camped on a private property now. No one is home. Left a note.
Wednesday, June 7 - Day 5 - 27 miles
WWW: Glass in early morning and evening, choppy all afternoon. Nice and sunny. Light headwinds all day.
Grand Marais was great! Stopped into Gunflint Tavern for a late lunch. Talked with a gentleman hiking the Superior Hiking Trail. When I went to pay, someone had already paid for me. Made me emotional. Pushed hard in the evening to make tomorrow easier to get to Grand Portage. Camped on a random beach next to the road.
Thursday, June 8 - Day 6 - 21 miles
(I wrote this entry the day after because I was enjoying my evening with my grandmother)
WWW: Water was glass all morning and afternoon with no fog and not too hot of temps. Absolutely perfect.
Got up at 6:00am to hit the water to make it to Grand Portage. Met up with Grandma Cynthia at the casino hotel there. Resupplied, added a pull cord to the keg, and tried to fix bulkhead. Enjoyed ribs for dinner, lost $10 at the casino, showered, slept hard.
Friday, June 9 - Day 7 - 18 miles
WWW: Experienced my first intense tailwind on the way to the border station. Mid headwind going up the Pigeon River. Nice tailwind on the way out of the river.
It was difficult saying goodbye to my Grandma Cynthia today. Had an interview with Vallen Cook who works at a forestry center in GP and has Native American Connections. Harder paddle than expected to border patrol station, but the agents were nice and gave me no hassle. Camped on an island with a small shed on it and a big no trespassing sign… but it’s a remote island so I’m not as concerned. Might be a storm tonight. It’s windy now. Buckled down the tent tight.
Saturday, June 10 - Day 8 - 12 miles
WWW: Slept in this morning because it was too windy for my liking. Sprinkled a bit last night. Cloudy all day with a glimpse of sun this evening. Paddled straight into a headwind all day.
Not a bad day. Felt good to sleep in and eat the bacon and sausage left over from GP for breakfast/lunch. Didn’t make it as far as I’d hoped today, but that’s ok. Camped on a windy beach now.
Sunday, June 11 - Day 9 - 22 miles
WWW: Nice and calm morning and afternoon with blue skies all day.
What a beautiful day! Today was the day I did the 7 mile open water crossing from Pie Island to Sleeping Giant. Perfect conditions for it all and I timed it perfectly, because 20 minutes after I got off, it was white caps out there. Pie island was stunning up close. The beach I had lunch on had coin like rocks. Currently camped at Thunder Cape Bird Observatory. They have a cool observation tower I climbed. Life is good.
Monday, June 12 - Day 10 - 23 miles
WWW: Water was nice and calm all day long. Mostly cloudy. Light sprinkle.
What a day! Started at Thunder Cape Bird Observatory, and when I started paddling on its East side, I noticed what I thought could be a yacht. It was a viking cruise ship. It reminded me of a mothership because it launched at least 20 separate boats from it of various sizes full of tourists to go explore the area. I stopped next to the boat and looked in awe for a few minutes. Then in Silver Islet, they had a cool little general store connected to their harbor. I bought some snacks there and watched some international tourists look around. From there, I had another big crossing across Black Bay. Went smoothly. The point I was paddling to, Porphyry island had a lighthouse at its point. People had lived next to it for generations just to keep the light running. From there, I kind of got turned around among the islands and happened across a mama moose and her little one meandering down a shoreline. Not too far after, I spotted a remote-looking lighthouse, and I was tired, so I pulled up to see if I could camp there. I am here now and it’s the coolest camp spot ever. It’s a lighthouse meant for kayak camping. The sign says paddlers welcome and has a map of the water trail and other lighthouses like it. There are signatures on the walls from the early 50s. So cool! Very glad to have found it.
Tuesday, June 13 - Day 11 - 0 miles
WWW: Cloudy all day with what would have been an annoying headwind all day.
If paddling is my day job, then I just worked 10 days straight, so I took today off to relax and recoup and because also… I’m staying in a remote lighthouse on an island. All I did today was meander around, stretch a lot and eat. Felt good to chill out. Hopefully it’s not as windy tomorrow and I can hit it hard again.
Wednesday June 14 - Day 12 - 0 miles
WWW: Strong North winds all day again. Cloudy all day again.
I wish I could’ve paddled today, but these headwinds told me to be more patient, and that I should be thankful for the great conditions so far. I rearranged stuff in the kayak today, but other than that, I listened to music and a whole lot of nothing else. Saw one big boat go by. First sign of people in three days. I’m gonna miss this place.
Thursday, June 15 - Day 13 - 25 miles
WWW: Cloudy morning and sunny afternoon. Strong headwind leaving the lighthouse and moderate headwinds the rest of the day.
It felt good to get after it again today! The lighthouse was great but I’m glad to be out of those islands. Tried out the wet suit today… and it was super warm and comfy. Today was the first day paddling with no shirt on. The winds made it feel like I was going the wrong way up an escalator, but I like to do that every now and then.
Friday, June 16 - Day 14 - 28 miles
WWW: Perfect morning. Warm and sunny and no wind. Nice tailwind all afternoon and strong tailwind in the evening.
What a day! Long paddle to Rossport, but some sweet views. Columnar basalt at Simpson Island was mind blowing. Then more shoveling to the Battle Island Lighthouse where a caretaking family was camping for the weekend and unlocked the lighthouse for me to go to the top! They even flashed the light for me! Now I’m camping in Rossport at my new buddy Zac’s campsite. He reached out via Facebook to help me. Just finished doing sauna with him and his family. Doing a sea kayak lesson with him tomorrow. Forgot to mention the amazing rib dinner I got at Serendipity restaurant. What a fun Friday!
Saturday June 17 - Day 15 - 1 mile
WWW: Partly cloudy with a light breeze all day.
Zac with Such A Nice Day paddling Co invited me to stay the day for breakfast and an into kayak program reviewing skills, so I did! We started with a session on weather after breakfast, and spent the afternoon working on self and assisted rescues in open water. It was just super fun to get to paddle with other people, plus Canadians seem to all be super cool. Did a sauna after burgers and brats for dinner and then said my goodbyes. It sucked saying goodbye, but I realized you meet cool people doing cool things, but you have to do those cool things to get those opportunities, and so I must continue to paddle.
Sunday, June 18 - Day 16 - 20 miles
WWW: Cloudy with calm water all day. Slight headwind in afternoon.
Great Day for a paddle! Want from Rossport to Terrace Bay. Saw a big fish jump high out of the water in the morning, and caught a glimpse of an otter sticking its head out of the water to check me out. While walking into town, I hitched a ride from Sahand, a nice man close to my age. Funny enough, after telling him my name just before he dropped me off at the Chinese food take-out place, he said he remembered hearing someone mention I’d be coming through town! Small town stuff. I love Canada! Got my food and walked back to the kayak and paddled a short distance backwards to find a camping spot. Slept in a funny location on a rocky beach, but slept well nonetheless.
Monday, June 19 - Day 17 - 1 mile
WWW: Almost hot with perfectly Calm Water.
Taking the day off to like some trails in Terrace Bay. This is in order to make good timing to meet up with the family in Marathon on Wednesday. It would’ve been perfect conditions to paddle the seven miles out to the Slate Islands, but I’d want more time to spend out there if I did. Figure I’ll save it for next time. It’d make for a good week or two trip.
Tuesday, June 20 - Day 18 - 22 miles
WWW: Perfect conditions. Smooth and sunny around 70 degrees.
Had a great and scenic paddle from a bit past Terrace Bay to Pic Island. Today is the summer solstice and I am camped on a big rock outcrop that has a perfect view of the sunset and sunrise. Great way to celebrate the natural holiday.
Wednesday, June 21 - Day 19 - 13 miles
(Writing this two days late… We got some catching up to do.)
WWW: Near glass all morning and afternoon. Sunny and not too hot.
Mosquitos were bad in the morning again, but the water was perfect. Did a casual 12 miles into Marathon to meet up with my grandparents Pat and Norma, and my mom. Talked to Tom Anderson who was doing the circle tour on his motorcycle. Put the kayak in a rented kayak locker. Went to A&W , tried to epoxy the leaky bulkhead again, Chinese for dinner, and went to bed at a motel.
Thursday, June 22 - Day 20 - 0 miles
WWW: Warm and sunny.
Breakfast at the Oar house in Marathon, restocked the kayak, Tim Hortons, watched Water Walker by Bill Mason, checked out Puckaskwa National Park. Beautiful!!! Had a great conversation with Jim who was going down the shoreline of Puckaskwa in a rowboat he built! Ive been inspired to row. Had Poutine for dinner. Slept hard.
Friday, June 23 - Day 21 - 16 miles
WWW: Sunny all day and smooth chop with a light headwind all day.
Breakfast at the Oar house in Marathon again. The server man was grumpy and it was funny. Then I got the kayak ready and said goodbye to the family with is never easy. The section I paddled today might be my favorite so far, but I suspect tomorrow might be even better. Camped on a large stone beach. Spent an hour or more watching a beaver swim around the bay. Some otters past by too. This is the first night I have worried about bears.
Saturday, June 24 - Day 22 - 17 miles
WWW: Calm and cloudy all day with moderate rain in the afternoon.
Relatively chill day. Puckaskwa is so beautiful. Checked out a shallow moth of a legitimate cave marked on the GPS. Music makes the day fly by. I chose what is probably considered a dumb campsite on a rock on an island too far away from the kayak, but I like it here so I’m doing it.
Sunday, June 25 - Day 23 - 0 miles
WWW: Thunderstorm in the morning with high winds and intermittent rain all day.
Today was the first day spent totally in the tent, and it wasn’t that bad. Caught up on rest, listened to podcasts, and ate good food.
Monday, June 26 - Day 24 - 20 miles
WWW: Cloudy and smokey with moderate tailwind all day.
I don’t think I’ll see anything more beautiful than I saw today. The waterfall up the swallow river was absolutely mystical. The river leading up to it was lined with cedars. The cascade falls was terrific as well. Then I went out to see the Otter Island Lighthouse, camped near the mouth of the Puckaskwa River.
Tuesday, June 27 - Day 25 - 32 miles
WWW: Sunny all day with perfect moderate tailwinds.
Good haul today. Everything was feeling right, and tailwinds, so I just kept going. Stopped to watch a moose meander along a sandy beach and go for a swim. Music and podcasts may the day fly by.
Wednesday, June 28 - Day 26 - 20 miles
(Wrote 3 days late because I was being lazy)
WWW: sunny and smooth with a light tailwind.
Got on the water around 8:30am and cranked out a casual 20 miles by 3:00 to make it into Wawa. Podcasts are almost cheating for how well they make the time pass. Left my boat behind a motor shop in the marina and liked four miles up to the Hwy 17 motel. Walked into town and got food at the local bar. Enjoyed the luxury or the shower and basked in the feeling of having a hotel room alone.
Thursday, June 29 - Day 27 - 0 miles
WWW: Cloudy and windy with intermittent showers.
Mostly had a lazy day in the motel while waiting out a storm. Walked into town for Tim Hortons and the grocery store.
Friday, June 30 - Day 28 - 0 miles
WWW: Wet and foggy.
Another day in the motel waiting out the storm. Hitched a ride into town with a guy named Jamie. Bought a bacon cheeseburger and walked back to the motel.
Saturday, July 1 - Day 29 - 12 miles
WWW: Clear and sunny morning to afternoon. Foggy evening.
Felt good to get back at it again. Wawa was sweet. Met a lovely lady working on an organic farm selling smoked fish. We talked for a while and I interviewed her. Carrole - a sweet French Canadian. Brad was the name of the guy at the motor shop. I signed his log book before leaving.
Sunday, July 2 - Day 30 - 27 miles
WWW: Partly cloudy all day, low winds, and relatively calm water.
Not much to say today. Saw three groups of kayakers at a distance. Podcasts make the day fly. Camped on a pebble beach.
Monday, July 3 - Day 31 - 28 miles
WWW: Sunny and relatively calm day.
Today flew by! Beautiful section of shoreline. Pushed to try and get myself in range of town tomorrow. Camped on a pebble beach again. Tired.
Tuesday, July 4 - Day 32 - 25 miles
WWW: Sunny. Headwinds in the morning and sidewinds in the afternoon. Glass in Batchawana Bay.
It was a sweaty grind to get here today, but I was so relieved to have found a small burger shop in town. Bought some beer for the holiday and camped in a public park.
Wednesday, July 5 - Day 33 - 1 miles
WWW: Rain in the morning with scattered thunderstorms.
Took a rest day in the Voyager Inn while waiting out the storm. It was absolutely lovely. Cute play and friendly people.
Thursday, July 6 - Day 34 - 6 miles
WWW: Super foggy morning and strong West winds and sun all afternoon.
Big breakfast at the Inn and best apple fritter ever. Meandered into the big water where I realized it was too windy in the wrong way to safely cross from Batchawana Island to Rudderhead Point, so I spend all day walking a sandy beach and napping in the kayak. Sucked to have to stop, but patience is a virtue, and tomorrow looks good.
Friday, July 7 - Day 35 - 23 miles
WWW: Sunny all day with mild sidewinds.
Nothing much to report. Good paddle today. Excited to make it into Sault St. Marie tomorrow! Camped on a rocky beach.

WWW: Calm and cloudy. Light sprinkle in afternoon. Sunny evening.
Back in the USA! Paddled among ships to get into Sault St. Marie, checked back into the states at the border patrol station and walked into a sweet little restaurant called the Wicked Sister for dinner. Nice man Todd bought my dinner. Camped in a public access.
Sunday, July 9 - Day 37 - 23 miles
WWW: Mostly sunny all day. Headwinds all morning, tailwinds all evening.
Started the day with a breakfast at the Lock View Cafe. Big open water crossing coming out of Sault St. Marie, Camped on a long sandy beach. Trying to make it to Paradise tomorrow.
Monday, July 10 - Day 38 - 22 miles
WWW: Windy, cloudy, and some rain. Sun peaked out in the evening. Major thunderstorm tonight.
Today was an uphill battle against annoying headwinds, but I persevered and made it to Paradise MI. Staying in a hotel because there is a major thunder storm. Had dinner at The Inn. Bought bread from the gift shop and had a great conversation with Andrea who made the bread. She bought me a loaf.
Tuesday, July 11 - Day 39 - 11 miles
WWW: Sunny all day. Some winds. Very windy in the open water.
Had a good breakfast at the hotel and whipped out 11 miles to make it to the Lake Superior Shipwreck Museum. It was so cool! Such a rich history on this lake. Whitefish Point and its sandy, shallow shoreline and coast is a significant location for wreaks. Happy to be camping on it!
Wednesday, July 12 - Day 40 - 29 miles
WWW: Sunny morning. Light to moderate tailwinds all day. Cloudy afternoon.
It felt so cool to go around Whitefish point this morning. Was feeling slow the first hour so I stopped for a swim and some snacks on a remote sandy beach. In the afternoon, I came across the Crisp Point Lighthouse and stopped to check it out. I was suprised to see it was open to the public to climb, and I did! It was a remote camp of sorts but they had a nice gift shop. Got into autopilot for a few hours after that and now I’m camped on a long sandy beach again.
Thursday, July 13 - Day 41 - 30 miles
WWW: Mostly sunny with calm water all day. Dead calm in the evening.
Cruised into the town of Grand Marais, MI to get dinner, and when I paddled into the harbor, there was over 100 sea kayakers paddling around in groups! Someone told me on shore that it was the Great Lakes Sea Kayak Symposium - a yearly four day conference and demo of sea kayaks! Got a steak at Lake Superior Brewing Company. Bought a hat and got given a T-shirt from a lovely lady at a gift shop whom I had a conversation with. Debbie. Then I bought some pasties for the road and did 8 miles to a campsite next to a sweet lighthouse after passing the biggest sand dunes I’ve ever seen.
Friday, July 14 - Day 42 - 20 miles - The best day.
WWW: Calm and cloudy morning. Thunderstorm and rain all afternoon. Partly sunny evening with light winds. Relatively calm water all day.
The morning started slow, and I procrastinated on starting. The first ten miles of the morning were hard, uphill, and grueling along a long, straight, sandy beach, but then I started to see some beautiful clouds as a thunderstorm formed across the lake and drew near. Lighting strikes were hitting the water far in the distance. Over time, it passed to the South and I ended up paddling through about a half an hour of hard but sunny rain. I was prepared for it and it was beautiful. As soon as it had stopped, I pulled my hood down and saw that I had paddled int a beautiful section of Pictured Rocks National Shoreline. The colors and rock formations there I got to see would take a long time to attempt to describe. They were fantastic. I first came up to Spray Falls which pours over an overhanging cliff into the water. I paddled directly under it. There were five jet skiers checking it out too that I talked with and took some pictures for. Then I saw Chapel Rock… and some crazy sea caves… and some arches. Camped in a cave wooded area along a popular hiking tail.
Saturday, July 15 - Day 43 - 15 miles
WWW: Calm and cloudy. Rain for over an hour in the evening. Partly sunny dusk.
Slow to get up. Got on the water and saw there were hundreds of tourists in tandem kayaks being deployed by large boats holding at least 50 kayaks each. Paddled around them all past a beautiful section of cliffs and caverns. Checked out a few other sea caves on the way into Munising MI. I got a big burrito, smoked fish and a couple pasties. A guy in town said Munising is a town of 3,000 people and they have over a million visitors each year. Camped on Grand island on a small rock bar.
Sunday, July 16 - Day 44 - 20 miles
WWW: Cloudy and rainy with slight headwind.
When I woke up, the glass-bottom shipwreck tour was giving a talk over a speaker in the bay I camped near. I took it nice and easy all day while eating pasties.
Monday, July 17 - Day 45 - 0 miles
WWW: Windy from the West. Mostly cloudy.
Didn’t wanna fight the uphill battle into strong headwinds today if I didn’t have to, and I don’t. Hung out in the tent in the woods. Anxious to get after it tomorrow and get to Marquette.
Tuesday, July 18 - Day 46 - 18 miles.
WWW: Slight headwind. Sunny.
When I went around the point of the peninsula I was camped on, I could see Marquette 20 miles in the distance, and just paddled straight for it all day to get to a hotel to shelter from the storm coming. Checked-in and walked to town for dinner.

Good grind today. Rained hard for a while. Sleeping on a rock wrapped in the tarp tonight. Hope it don’t rain.
Sunday, July 23 - Day 51 - 25 miles
(I’m really sorry, but I’ve neglected to do my journal for a few days. I’m going to do my best to recount the notable details from each day…)
WWW: Hazy sun with a sprinkle in the morning.
Paddled into the town of L’ance and got some snacks at the grocery store. Phone calls. Camped on a sandy beach 2 miles out of town. AND while paddling into town I went by a cool old brick structure near a yard full of old sailboats for sale. I explored it a little bit and dreamt about what it must’ve looked like in its time. The I noticed the water tower near by had the Ford logo on it.
Monday, July 24 - Day 52 - 29 miles
WWW: Partly cloudy, sunny evening.
Paddled into the Houghton Handcock canal and through Portage Lake. As I was reaching the mouth of the river, a man high on a cliff stepped of his porch and walked to the edge to wave and gave me regards. He asked where I was going, and I told him my story. He told me to find a book with an author named “Kohler” about a man who did the south shore by canoe in the early 1800’s. When I made it into Houghton, there was a kayak dock next to their lift bridge. I loved seeing that town. I could see myself living there someday. Camped on a random dock of an open lot among houses.
Tuesday, July 25 - Day 53 - 28 miles
WWW: Partly cloudy with light tailwinds.
Paddled out of the canal and down towards Ontonogan. Really beautiful section of shoreline.
Wednesday, July 26 - Day 54 - 30 miles
WWW: Low winds and hot sun.
I could see Ontonogan from 20 miles out, so I paddled straight for it. Stopped in town for snacks and checked out a museum. Take with recently retired corrections officer over a big burger. Did another 10 miles out of town as the sun was setting on the water. Camped on a terrible, sharp, rocky beach.
Thursday, July 27 - Day 55 - 15 miles
WWW: Off and on rain with light winds.
Stopped at a little camp store in the afternoon for snacks. Camped in a cool cedar grove in Porcupine State Forrest.
Friday, July 28 - Day 56 - 24 miles
WWW:Moderate to high winds all day.
Did a hard grind in the morning with great tailwinds. Swamped the boat after landing in a bad spot for lunch. While looking for a spot to stop and pee in the afternoon, a large wave washed over me and swiftly brought me all the way on shore from about 20 feet out. Couldn’t launch from anywhere, so I hung out in the sun for a few hours. Did a mile in the evening to find a better camping spot. Camped on the gravelly edge of a river bank.
Saturday, July 29 - Day 57 - 26 miles
WWW: Sunny and calm.
Relatively plain shoreline. Camped on a Long Island pointed towards Bayfield.
Sunday, July 30 - Day 58 - 12 miles
WWW: Light wind and sunny.
Paddled to the town of LaPoint on Madeline Island. Rented and rode a moped around. Found out Todd Albright, a folk music artist I’ve always liked, was playing at Tom’s Burned Down Cafe, so I stayed the night there to watch him.

Bebopped through the Apostles. It was beautiful. Camped on York Island in a little cemetery.

Wednesday, August 2 - Day 61 - 11 miles
WWW: Light winds and sunny.
I knew I had some time to kill in order to make it to Duluth on my projected date, so I spent the morning having coffee and chatting with Loni and Joe. Joe, a 70 year old lady, made me bacon and eggs for breakfast. So kind. In the evening, I stopped in Herbster to check out their general store, and when I got back to the boat, my professor Tim Bates was there in a canoe. Nice to see him. Camped on a sandstone rock and went swimming.
Thursday, August 3 - Day 62 - 31 miles
WWW: Water was glass all day. Hottest day.
Just paddled. Stopped three times to swim. I waved at a low flying plane and it waved back. Camped on a sand beach 10 miles from Duluth.
Friday, August 4 - Day 63 - 10 miles
WWW: Very windy and sunny.
Bout to paddle under the bridge again. What it trip it has been. Where has the time gone…
